Collector Condition and Rarity 1948 Oversize (35 mm’s) Solid 18ct Rose Gold Bull Horn Lug Rolex Precision Gents Vintage Watch

The Overview

I Love all the watches in our collection but every now again we find something truly exceptional and this Rolex is just such a watch.

The solid 18ct rose gold bull horn or tear drop case is in exceptional condition with only the most minor signs of wear (very small ding in the outside caseback) – the Rolex Crown and Serial number are wonderfully defined on the outside caseback (these are nearly always worn off with wear or polishing and it’s allowed us to date the watch from the serial number). The watch also has the original and extremely rare rose gold ‘thimble’ crown (Rolex didn’t ‘sign’ winding crowns at this time). We often refinish dials but this Rolex signed dial has aged beautifully so we’ve left it alone. The applied rose gold spearhead hour batons with pyramid batons at the 3 and 9 and Arabics at the 6 and 12 looks stunning. The original rose gold hands and subsidiary second dial complete the late art-deco look. The original Rolex signed super high grade manual wind movement is again in excellent condition and has just been serviced by our professional watchmaker. To complete this stunning piece we’ve fitted a super high quality Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches dark brown ‘London’ alligator strap with gold plated (yellow) Hirsch buckle. This strap retails at £195.00.

This is a simply stunning example of this iconic and extremely rare watch; a similar piece, if available, in the Burlington Arcade would be comfortably in excess of £10,000….

My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a three month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order

The Case

The solid 18ct rose gold bull horn or tear drop case is in exceptional condition with only the most minor signs of wear (very small ding in the outside caseback) – the Rolex Crown and Serial number are wonderfully defined on the outside caseback (these are nearly always worn off with wear or polishing and it’s allowed us to date the watch from the serial number). The case measures a fraction under 35 mm’s across, excluding the rose gold ‘thimble’ crown and 40 mm’s long including the wonderful bull horn or tear drop lugs. The outside case carries the Rolex Crown and the serial number which is ‘561777’. The inside case is signed ‘Rolex Geneva Swiss’ and the case numbers are ‘4399 & 785’. It also has the appropriate hallmarks for solid 18ct gold.
