Extremely Rare 1947 Steel Omega Cosmic Moonphase Gents Vintage Watch

The Overview

This is a beautiful example of the iconic and game changing Omega Cosmic Moonphase from 1947. Omega presented the Moonphase at the Geneva Watch Show and it caused a genuine stir. Later known as ‘complications’, many thought it was a vision of the future rather than a working watch.

The steel case is in overall excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear and a small amount of pitting on the underside of the inside caseback. The original Omega signed white dial looks to have been refinished at some point in its life but it’s been done extremely well. There are a few marks on the dial and I’ve tried to capture these on the photographs but most are very difficult to see with the naked eye. The black painted Arabic numbers, steel hands with blue ‘day’ hand along with the sub-second and moonphase create a truly stunning look. The original Omega signed manual wind movement is again in very good condition and has just been fully serviced by our professional watchmaker. To complete this piece we’ve added a new, high quality, black crocodile skin strap with genuine steel Omega buckle (whilst genuine we believe this to be from the 1960’s).

My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a three month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order.

The inside case is signed ‘Acier Inoxyable’, ‘Omega Watch Co’, ‘Fab Suisse Swiss Made’ and the case number is ‘2471/1’. The case measures 34 mm across, excluding the Omega signed winding crown and 42 mm long including the lugs.

The Conclusion

This is a rare and highly collectable vintage watch from one of horology’s most famous names and will, if history is any judge, provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to treasure and enjoy. I will provide an insurance valuation in excess of my asking price. Please appreciate the difficulty of photographing this piece, it looks even better in real life. Subject to your location I’ll happily show the watch. I’m happy for this watch to be authenticated if required.
