Just Beautiful 1956 Oversize Solid 9ct Gold Jaeger ‘Powermatic’ Bumper Automatic Gents Vintage Watch

The Overview

Founded in 1833, Jaeger Le Coultre have long been acknowledged as one of the premier watchmakers in terms of their extremely high quality movements, their effortlessly elegant design and innovation. They made the iconic Reverso in the 1930’s and followed this up with the wrist alarm and then the Powermatic… Most Powermatics were made in steel with a 32 mm case and only a few came with the 34 mm case (excluding the period crown) and in solid gold. The Powermatic is an automatic with the world famous ‘bumper’ movement – the rotor rocks from side to side rather than turning 360 degrees (this proved to be a more efficient way of charging the movement). It also has a power reserve window allowing the movement to be manually wound to around 40 hours and then the automatic keeps it charged (the automatic doesn’t drive the power window, this is only done when wound).

This oversize Solid 9ct gold Powermatic dates from 1956. The solid 9ct yellow gold case is in stunning condition with only the most minor signs of wear. The original Jaeger signed ivory/cream dial and power meter dial (crisp white) has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standards and is just magnificent. The applied yellow gold hour batons with applied yellow gold Arabic numbers at the quarters along with the original yellow gold ‘dagger’ hands provide the softest contrast to the steel and blend perfectly with the gleaming yellow gold case. Jaeger movements are amongst the highest quality in the world and this Jaeger signed automatic ‘bumper’ is in excellent condition and has just been fully serviced by our professional watchmaker. To complete this delicious piece we’ve added a new, high quality, dark brown Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches crocodile skin strap with a gold plated Hirsch buckle.

My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a three month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order.

The outside back carries the number ‘13020’ and the inside is signed ‘DTE’ – This stands for De Travers Limited who were a world renowned casemaker based in London who supplied cases for many of the most prestigious watch brands including Rolex – and carries the appropriate hallmarks for solid 9ct gold. The London hallmark, the lion, shows along with the letter ‘a’ which dates it to 1956. The case measures just over 34 mm’s across, excluding the winding crown and 40 mm’s long including the lugs.
