Just Beautiful 1959 Solid 9ct Gold Rolex Coin Edge Precision Gents Vintage Watch

The Overview

This is a beautiful example of the solid 9ct yellow gold Rolex Precision dating from 1959. The very rare solid 9ct gold ‘Coin Edge’ case is in excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear – there is a minor ding on the outside case back (the case is also the rarer version with the coin edge carried onto the lugs). The stunning and original Rolex signed ivory/cream dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standard and is wonderfully understated. The raised gold Arabic hour numbers at the quarters and spearhead batons in between along with the original gold hands provide the softest contrast to the dial and blend perfectly with the gleaming gold case – please see picture 6 for the colours of the Numbers and Hands). The very high grade Rolex signed manual wind movement has just been fully serviced by my watchmaker. To complete this very special watch I have added a new, high quality Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches dark brown crocodile skin strap with a gold plated Hirsch buckle.

My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a three month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order.

The Case

The very rare solid 9ct gold ‘Coin Edge’ case is in excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear (the case is also the rarer version with the coin edge carried onto the lugs). The case measures 33 mm across, excluding the winding crown and 40 mm long including the lugs. The inside case is signed ‘D S & S’ (this is the English casemaker, Shackman, who made cases for a lot of the major brands including Rolex, Omega, Jaeger and Breitling) and the case number is ‘9998’. It has the appropriate hallmarks for solid 9ct gold – the Lion is the London Assay Office and the age letter is ‘d’ dating it to 1959.

The Conclusion

This is a rare and highly collectable vintage watch from one of horology’s most famous names and will, if history is any judge, provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to treasure and enjoy. I will provide an insurance valuation in excess of my asking price. Please appreciate the difficulty of photographing this piece, it looks even better in real life.
