Stunning 1950’s Solid 18ct Gold Rolex Precision Sub-Second Chronometer Standard Gents Vintage Watch

The Overview

I love all the watches in our collection but every now and again we find something incredibly special and this Rolex is just such a piece. Rolex began making dress watches in the late 1930’s and they we primarily round, 9ct gold and had the 17 jewel ‘precision’ movement. This is one of the few square cased Rolex we’ve seen from this period in solid 18ct gold with the super high grade ‘Chronometer’ standard movement – the best movement Rolex made at this time.

The solid 18ct gold case in excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear – the solder line from the case to the lug (the ’10’ lug) is just visible but very hard to see normal wear. The case has a beautiful central ridge at the top and bottom and this is the first time we’ve had this style. The original Rolex signed sub-second (as against centre second) dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standard and is very much of its time. The applied alternating Arabic and hour batons along with the slim gold hands and sub-second create a classically late art-deco feel. The super high grade Rolex signed manual wind ‘Chronometer’ standard movement is again in the excellent condition and has just been fully serviced by our professional watchmaker – as mentioned, this is the highest grade movement Rolex made at this time. To complete this piece we’ve added a new, very high grade, black Hirsch ‘London’ alligator skin strap with Hirsch gold plated buckle (this start retails at around £200).

My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a three month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order.

The case measures just over 25 mm across, excluding the winding crown and 36 mm long including the lugs. The inside case is signed ‘Rolex Geneve Suisse’ and the case reference is ‘4612’. It also has the Swiss hallmark for solid 18ct gold.

The Conclusion

This is a rare and highly collectable vintage watch from one of horology’s most famous names and will, if history is any judge, provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to treasure and enjoy. I will provide an insurance valuation in excess of my asking price. Please appreciate the difficulty of photographing this piece, it looks even better in real life.
