Stunning 1960 1961 Rolex Oyster Perpetual with Guarantee, Chronometer Certificate and Purchase Invoice

The Overview

This is a beautiful example of the Rolex Oyster made in 1960 and sold (& tested) in 1961. Original paperwork on watches that are 20 years is rare but to find paperwork, especially as comprehensive as this, on a watch that’s nearly 60 years is incredibly rare (as few as 1 in 500 watches). We have the original guarantee, small chronometer certificate and the full records certificate – most rarely is the small attachment to the main certificate confirming the date of the test (this is only the second time we’ve ever had this). We also have the original purchase invoice, EJ Gallichan & Co Ltd of Guernsey, with the selling price of £39 and 10 shillings….

The solid steel case is in excellent condition with only the most minimal signs of wear. The original crisp steel pearlescent Rolex signed dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standard and is classically Rolex. The applied steel spearhead batons and steel hands provide the softest contrast to the dial and blend perfectly with the gleaming case. The very high grade ‘chronometer’ standard automatic movement is again in excellent condition and has just been fully serviced by our professional watchmaker. To complete this beautiful piece we’ve added a new, super high quality, black Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches ‘London’ alligator skin strap with steel steel buckle. We’ve also included a genuine 1960’s Rolex box.

Watches in this condition and rarity are already proving to be great investments; with this paperwork it’s exceptional.

As mentioned, it has just been serviced by my watchmaker and, in view of the high-grade Swiss movement, I will include a 3 month guarantee on the movement which is long enough for you to assess the working order.

The Case

The solid steel case is in excellent condition with only the most minimal signs of wear. The case measures 33 mm’s across excluding the Rolex signed winding crown and 40 mm’s long including the lugs. The inside case is signed ‘Montres Rolex SA Geneva Switzerland Patented’ and the case number is ‘1002’ – Rolex used the same case backs for various models and this one also shows 1003, this is fairly common and we guarantee it’s correct. The age reference for when the watch was made is ‘111.60’ dating it to 1960. As mentioned, the watch was made in 1960 and sold in 1961

The Conclusion

This is a rare and highly collectable vintage watch from one of horology’s most famous names and will, if history is any judge, provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to treasure and enjoy. I will provide an insurance valuation in excess of my asking price. Please appreciate the difficulty of photographing this piece, it looks even better in real life. Subject to your location I’ll happily show the watch.
