Cartier were launched in 1847 and quickly built a reputation for style and quality in jewellry. They produced their first wristwatch in 1904 at the request of the Brazilian aviator called Alberto Santos-Dumont hence the model name of Santos. Cartier cemented their quality by using Jaeger movements and the large square dedicated watch went into full time production in 1911 and helped moved men from pocket watches to wristwatches.
This would’ve originally been a normal size gents watch but is now seen as Unisex. The case measures 33mm across, excluding the Cartier crown and 42mm long including the lugs.
This Santos was sold in 2009 and we’re selling it on behalf of the original owner. It’s been a regularly worn watch and is showing signs of wear on the steel case and deployment clasp. I’ve tried to capture these on the photographs but please ask for more detailed ones or a wrist video if you need a closer look. The overall condition is very good and to the naked eye the case looks great. The original dial in the classic paper colour with the Roman numeral hour markers is perfectly framed by the signature smooth bezel with screws and of course the blue stoned winding crown. Our watchmaker has serviced the automatic movement and we will give a 12 month guarantee. The watch sits on a ladies size Cartier deep blue (almost black) leather strap with Cartier signed steel deployment clasp. Whilst this would’ve originally been waterproof to 100 meters we can no longer guarantee it’s fully waterproof due to its age. In terms of provenance we have:
- The Cartier purchase certificate
- The Cartier booklets
- The Cartier DVD (very 2009…)
- The Cartier box (watch cushion missing)
- Cartier travel bag in red suede
One of the joys of Cartier is there style rarely changes quickly and this watch isn’t a lot different now.
