I love all the watches in our collection but every now and again we find something exceptional and this Datejust is just such a watch. Sold in Kowloon Hong Kong when China was still in the grip of communism and Britain still ran the country it’s a stunning piece. The solid 18ct yellow gold case has some very minor signs of wear and we haven’t had them softly removed it as it looks as though it’s never been polished and barely warn – the ridges in the fluted bezel are as crisp as when new (there’s a minor mark on the lug under the ‘7’ baton). The original and untouched champagne sunburst dial is again in excellent condition – I’ve struggled to capture the sunburst but have done a WhatsApp video that shows it beautifully – if you’d like a copy please advise your mobile number. The very high grade chronometer standard automatic movement is again in as new condition and has just been fully serviced by our professional watchmaker. The watch sits on what we believe is the original black Rolex signed crocodile skin strap with genuine gold plated Rolex buckle – both are in very good condition but the strap does show wear on the underside (we’ll happily include a super high quality Hirsch ‘London’ alligator strap in black or dark brown if required). In terms of provenance we have:
- The Rolex punched paperwork – please note the Rolex stamp at the bottom saying the watch has been ‘supplied with leather strap’ – we’ve never seen this before.
- The Rolex brochures and wallet
- The Rolex boxes – inner and outer
If this watch was in a Rolex dealer today it would fit in perfectly with their current range. In view of the quality of the movement we will give a 12 month guarantee.
