The Rolex Oyster GMT was launched in 1954 and has become hugely collectable over the years with early examples, the 6542, nudging £100,000…. Film fans may know that Pussy Galore wore a GMT in Goldfinger – Pan Am also used the watch for all their pilots. To find a version of the 16700 with the original guarantee paperwork and invoice is wonderful. Rolex also produced what has become known as the ‘Swiss’ only dial for a period of 2 years of so. Rolex used a new type of lume called ‘Luminova’ in 1998 and then changed to ‘Super Luminova’ around 2,000. Dials with the Luminova, due to their short production run, have become very desirable.
This GMT was sold in December 1998 and is in excellent condition – we believe it’s been polished once but we haven’t and there are the usual wear marks around the case and bracelet. I’d be happy to send a What’s App video if required. The guaranteed and original Rolex signed ‘Swiss Only’ dial is of course untouched and again in excellent condition. We believe the Pepsi bezel insert, which has faded beautifully, is the original but we do guarantee it’s genuine Rolex. The super high grade chronometer standard movement is again in excellent condition and has just been serviced by our watchmaker. The watch sits on a guaranteed genuine and we believe original Rolex Oyster bracelet. Very rarely we have the following provenance:
- The original Rolex punched papers
- The original purchase receipt
- The original and very rare Rolex brochures
- The original red chronometer chip
- The original Rolex box – inner and outer
