Rolex began making larger dress watches in the very late 1930’s – the fashion for mens watches was a case size of 30 mm’s to 33 mm. They also made some ‘oversize’ cases which were 34 to 35 mm and extremely rarely they made jumbo size cases which were 36/37 mm excluding the crown. With over 1300 sales of Rolex this is only the fourth jumbo size we’ve ever had….
The solid 18ct rose gold case is in excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear – the serial number is clearly visible on the beautifully rounded caseback. The original Rolex signed very slightly off-white dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standards and is both understated and very much of its time. The painted black Arabic numbers with alternating painted rose gold ‘spot’ hour batons along with the slim rose gold hands (blued steel second hand) are perfectly framed by the solid 18ct rose gold ‘Thunderbird’ bezel. The super high grade Rolex signed ‘chronometer’ standard manual wind movement is again in excellent condition and has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker. To complete this very special watch I have added a new, high quality Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches dark brown crocodile skin strap with a gold plated (yellow) Hirsch buckle.
This is a simply stunning example of this iconic and extremely rare watch; a similar piece, if available, in the Burlington Arcade would be comfortably in excess of £10,000….
My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a 12 month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order
