Rolex began making larger dress watches in the very late 1930’s – the fashion for mens watches was a case size of 30 mm’s to 33 mm. They also made some ‘oversize’ cases which were 34 to 35 mm and these have become amongst the most desireable Rolex from this period.
The solid steel and rose gold (engine turned bezel) oversize case is in excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear – the Rolex crown is clearly visible on the outside caseback. The original Rolex signed ivory/cream dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standards and is very much of its time. The painted rose gold Arabic hour numbers with painted rose gold ‘dot’ hour batons in between along with the replacement rose gold hands provide the softest contrast to the dial and are perfectly framed by the rose gold engine turned bezel (please see picture 5 for the true colours of the dial). The very high grade Rolex signed 17 jewel manual wind movement is again in excellent condition and has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker. To complete this very special watch I have added a new, high quality Hirsch and Sonning Vintage Watches dark brown crocodile skin strap with a gold plated aftermarket Rolex buckle.
My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a 12 month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order.
