Outstanding Large Size 1950’s Steel (Jaeger) Le Coultre Day-Date with Box and Papers

The Overview

We are working with a UK based collector who has asked us to market a selection of his watches. As part of the offer each watch has had a full service and refurbishment by the UK’s leading watchmaker, Steven Hale Watch Restoration. Each watch will come with a 2 year guarantee from Steve Hale and a lifetime guarantee on the authenticity by Sonning Vintage Watches.

Jaeger le Coultre are one of the most famous names in watch and clock making with a history stretching back to 1833 and began making their own movements in the 1860’s. In the early 1900’s Jacques David Le Coultre joined forces with Edmond Jaeger to create Jaeger le Coultre. They are the most innovative of watchmakers starting with the famous ‘Reverso’ through to the Wrist Alarm and Memovox. They also created some of the earliest complications – Day, Month and Date watches and this example is as good as we’ve ever seen.

The solid steel teardrop lug case is in excellent condition with only the most minimal signs of wear. The original ivory/cream Le Coultre signed dial has been professionally refinished and is as beautiful as any watch we’ve seen. The day and date windows under the ’12’, large ‘day’ hand and oversize sub-second dial create a stunning look. The original Le Coultre signed manual wind movement is again in excellent condition and has just been fully serviced by Steven Hale. The watch sits on a dark brown calf skin strap with steel non-Jaeger buckle. Incredible rarely we also have the original paperwork which shows the case number (not movement number but the supplying dealer wouldn’t have had this) along with the instructions and ‘how to treat’ your watch from Jaeger. We also have the original box. I think with 1 exception this is the oldest watch with provenance.

The Conclusion

This is a beautiful example of a watch from one of horology’s most famous names and will, if history is any judge, provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to treasure and enjoy. I will provide an insurance valuation in excess of my asking price. Please appreciate the difficulty of photographing this piece, it looks even better in real life. Subject to your location I’ll happily show the watch.
