Launched in 1953, The Rolex Submariner is the most famous watch in the world. Worn by President Obama to James Bond as well as divers and oil rig workers; it is the ultimate sports watch. Rolex introduced the 5513 in 1962 and it ran side by side with the 5512 until 1980 and the inside cases were standard for both hence a lot of 5512’s have the 5513 inside case and vice versa.
This example was made in 1988/90 with the ‘L’ serial covering this period. The original jet black dial is untouched and in near faultless condition – the lume has aged to a beautiful mushroom colour. As is often the case the hands have been replaced at some point by Rolex and we have colour matched to the dial lume. The solid steel case has been polished but is still very ‘meaty’ and in excellent condition. The original 1520 movement is again in excellent condition and has just been serviced by our professional watchmaker. The watch sits on the original Rolex bracelet with the deployment references of N9 (1989) and 93150. The end pieces are also original with the references of 93150 and 580. We also have the original Rolex crater box which, very rarely, has the ‘5513’ sticker on the side (there is some damage on the other side of the box which would be due to a sticker being attached and removed.
This is a wonderfully original example of the most iconic watch in the world. There is a minor mark on the lens which our watchmaker will polish off prior to sale. If history is any judge this will provide a classic watch to wear and enjoy and be a valuable investment. In view of the high quality movement we will give a 12 month guarantee but will only be able to guarantee water resistance as against water proof due to the age.
