Rolex introduced the 16660 in 1978 and upgraded the dial from matte to gloss in 1983/84 and it ran to 1989. The ‘666’ as it’s become known is one of the most desireable Sea-Dwellers in the market and this example is wonderfully original.
This example was sold in 1988 by Watches of Switzerland and the solid steel case is in unpolished condition (it will almost certainly have been polished in the past but not for 5 to 10 years) so does have scratches on the case side (I’m always happy to send high res. pictures and/or a What’s App video showing them). The original and untouched dial is in excellent condition and the batons have aged to an ivory colour. The original Rolex signed automatic movement is in excellent condition and our watchmaker has just serviced it. The bracelet end pieces have the correct references of 93160 and 592. The deployment reference on the watch has the reference ’04’ so is a later replacement (we guarantee it’s Rolex). We also have what we believe is the original bracelet which has the age reference letter or ‘G’ dating it to 1982 (Rolex didn’t sell quite as quickly as they do now….). Both bracelets show signs of wear and the end pieces from the original bracelet have been put on the newer bracelet. We have also got an extremely comprehensive history with this watch:
- The original punched papers
- The original sales invoice
- The correct Rolex brochures dated 1988 (Submariner brochure) and 1987 (Rolex brochure)
- The original Rolex box – inner and outer
- The correct Rolex calendar dated 1988/1989
- The red chronometer chip
To find any history on a watch of this age is extremely rare but to find this, especially the sales invoice, is virtually unheard of.
As mentioned, our watchmaker will be carrying out a full service and clean (not polish) and we will include a 12 month guarantee.
