Originally designed for cave explorers to differentiate between light and dark (hence the large orange hand) it has become another classic model in the Rolex range. The watch was first seen in 1953 and Rolex linked it to the ascent of Everest. The large case 1016 is a genuine grail watch and in 1971 Rolex launched the 1655. At the time Steve McQueen was their brand ambassador and whilst he was never seen wearing one it became known as the Steve McQueen Explorer and ranks as one of the most desirable watches in the Rolex vintage range.
This example was made in 1971 and sold in 1973 by a UK dealer (the days before waiting lists…..). The steel case is in excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear – the chamfering on the lugs is outstanding. The original and beautiful black Rolex signed dial is again in excellent condition with only some extremely minor bubbling at the centre – I’ve tried to capture this on the pictures but it’s to small. There’s also a small amount of paint missing on the second hand and I’ve highlighted this on the pictures. The Rolex signed chronometer standard automatic calibre 1570 movement is again in excellent condition and our watchmaker has given it full a service. The watch sits on the original Rolex Oyster bracelet with the references:
End Pieces: 358 and 783B
The bracelet’s in excellent condition and very rarely has 14 links.
In terms of provenance we have:
- The Your Rolex Oyster guarantee
- The Rolex Explorer Brochure
- The correct large Crown swing tag (no serial number on it)
- The original Rolex cleaning cloth
- The original and extremely rare Rolex box – inner and outer with a document pouch and leatherette folder in the cardboard lid
This is an amazingly original example of this iconic watch and if history is any judge will provide a beautiful watch to wear and a sound investment.
