Collector Condition 1979 Steel & Solid 14ct Gold Rolex Oyster Datejust Buckley Dial with Punched Papers

The Overview

Rolex have produced hundreds of dial styles over the years and many have been given nicknames by collectors and enthusiasts. The Buckley dial is perhaps the oddest… It was believed to have been created as a homage to earlier dials with painted hour numbers as against the more modern (1960’s onwards) batons and to be frank wasn’t very popular at launch and many were changed to baton dials (nobody knows if Rolex destroyed or changed them in Switzerland). As Rolex became more and more collectable it was realised these, a little like the Swiss only dial, were rare and very desirable. John Buckley himself was a New York Rolex dealer and as a joke went onto the main Rolex forum suggesting Rolex should call this style the Buckley dial. The name stuck and to this day, for no other reason, it has become known as the Buckley Dial.

This is a stunning example of the very rare Buckley Dial Datejust with the original bracelet (very tight) and Punched Papers and it’s the quick-set date model. The steel and solid 14ct gold Case (bezel) case is in excellent condition with only the most minor signs of wear. The original crisp white with black painted Roman numeral dial is absolutely stunning and perfectly framed by the gleaming gold fluted bezel. The very high grade Rolex signed chronometer standard automatic movement is again in excellent condition and has just been serviced by our professional watchmaker. The watch sits on a genuine Steel and Solid 14ct gold Jubilee bracelet which is in excellent condition with very little sag/stretch (these retail for £3,500 new and £2,000 for one in this condition). The references are:

Deployment Clasp – 62523and E2 (Dates it to 1980)

End Pieces – 455 J

We also have the original Rolex punched papers showing the watch was sold by Rolex in the USA in 1979.

In view of the quality and condition we will give a 12 month guarantee.
