Wittenauer was an American watch brand founded by Albert Wittenauer, a Swiss immigrant, in 1880. He dreamed of bringing Swiss magic to the Americas and the recipe proved successful. After he passed Martha Wittenauer became their female CEO, a remarkable achievement and a first. She ran it between 1916 and 1936. She expanded the brand to work with the US Olympic committee and Forces. She sold the brand in 1936 and after a number of incarnations the brand was bought by Bulova in 2001.
This model was made in the 1940’s and is absolutely beautiful. The solid steel case with bull horn lugs is in near perfect condition with only the minor signs of wear. The original ivory/cream Wittenauer signed dial has been professionally refinished to an exceptional standard. The applied gilt hour numbers and alternating gilt dot hour batons along with day and month window and 1 to 31 date register in blue all go to make this a stunning dial. The high grade Wittenauer signed manual wind movement is again in excellent condition and has just been serviced by SHWR. To complete this beautiful piece we’ve added a new, high quality, black Hirsch crocodile skin strap with steel Hirsch buckle.
This is the first example of this watch we’ve ever had and whilst not suitable for everyday wear it’s perfect for a high days and holidays watch.
